The hotel's elegant Victorian architecture will remind visitors of its dignified history, a legacy that inspired publisher Rand McNally to describe the resort as having "more fame and historical significance than perhaps any hotel in North America." Opened on February 19, 1888, the Hotel Del Coronado quickly established itself as a cultural oasis of European charm and cuisine in the wild American West. The hotel is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and is listed by the Department of the Interior in the National Historic Register.

Celebrities and dignitaries from around the globe have made it their vacation destination. Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and 11 other United States President have stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado. The films Some Like It Hot and The Stunt Man and episodes of Baywatch and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous were all filmed at the hotel.
