Places of Interest in Fairfield and Jefferson County: Located 22 miles west of Mount Pleasant and 25 miles east of Ottumwa, Fairfield is the county seat of Jefferson County. Incorporated in 1847, Fairfield was home to the first Iowa State Fair in 1854. Fairfield and Jefferson County have many points of interest to enjoy while in town.
  • Carnegie Library - The first library built in Iowa and west of the Mississippi, it now houses Indian Hills Jefferson Center and the Carnegie Historical Museum. This library was the first time Carnegie funded a library in a town where he had no ties or investments.
  • McElhinny House - A well preserved example of vernacular domestic structure, which was built before 1850. It now houses the Fairfield Women's Club. It is one of the 27 buildings in downtown and the surrounding area that is on the national historical register.

  • Johnny Clock Museum - Located just east of Fairfield, it features dozens of hand-carved clocks of native and exotic woods. Also located in Lockridge one will find the New Sweden Lutheran congregation, organized in 1884 at the First Swedish Augustan Synod.
