Albert Sidney Johnson House:
503 South Court Street Washington, KY 606-759-7411 This house was the birthplace of the famous Confederate general, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, who was killed in the battle of Shiloh (1862) while leading a charge against General Grant's men. The museum recreates the family home with period furniture, photos, and documents. |

Paxton Inn:
2030 Old Main Street Washington, KY 6060-759-7411 Built around 1810 by James A. Paxton, a local attorney and ardent abolitionist, this inn was a safe house for escaping slaves. According to oral history, the slaves sat on the narrow staircase hidden next to the kitchen fireplace until they could safely be moved across the river to Ohio. |

Harriet Beecher Stowet Slavery to Freedom Museum:
2124 Old Main Street Washinton, KY 606-759-7411 The home of Marshall Key, this home was visited by Miss Stowe during the summer of 1833. While there, she attended a local slave auction and her reaction later prompted 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. Period furniture and displays showing slave life and pre-Civil War documents are featured. |

The National Underground Railroad Museum:
38 West Fourth Street Maysville, KY 606-564-9411 ext 314 This museum houses the rich legacy for justice and freedom on one of the central routes of escape followed by fugitive slaves. The museum is located in the Bier-bower house. This house, built in the 1840s, was used to hide runaway slaves. The artifacts and documents displayed here are a testament to the struggle of the men and women who crossed the Ohio and made their way north to freedom. |
