Property Information
Description:  Formerly a Ritz Carlton Hotel. In 1967, Miller Nichols, the president of J. C. Nichols Company, Inc., purchased 6.5 acres of land in the southwest corner of Ward Parkway and Wornall Road in the historic Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. What once was the site of 13 duplex dwellings and two single-family houses soon became the vision of a 400-room hotel and a set of luxury apartment buildings. Nichols' vision was to build a contemporary luxury hotel in the Plaza area that would provide warm and personal service to transient guests, residents in the area and business groups, as well as improve the image of Kansas City in the eyes of tourists and conventioneers. On February 1, 1969, that vision became a reality and construction began on the hotel. In keeping with the Spanish theme of the Country Club Plaza, Nichols hired Kansas City architects Kivett & Myers to design The Fairmont Kansas City at the Plaza. Contemporary Spanish architecture is reflected throughout the hotel, from the custom-designed furnishings to the guest rooms and refinished Hispanic artifacts throughout the hotel. On May 1, 1972, The Fairmont Kansas City at the Plaza opened its doors to the public. During the next 18 years, the hotel catered to the needs of such famous celebrities as Michael Jackson, Shelley Long, The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top and Steve Guttenberg. Today, The Fairmont Kansas City at the Plaza still stands by its original decree: "To earn the loyalty of our guests by exceeding their expectations and providing warm and personal service in distinctive surroundings."

Country Club Plaza Lighting Festival:  The Season of Lights: November 22, 2001 through January 12, 2002 The famous Plaza lights shine everyday into mid-January. The Plaza's magical seasonal celebration begins on November 22, 2001 (Thanksgiving evening) when 250,000 jewel-coloured bulbs transform the Plaza into a twinkling wonderland of colour. The Big Twelve Championship:  March 9th,10th,11th, 2001 The Big Twelve Championship is a men's college basketball tournament It is twelve teams from the midwest region and who ever wins get a bid to the NCAA tournament. Note: This is an annual event for the past ten years, but starting in 2003 it will be rotating with other cities. It will be here the in 2002 and then again in 2005.

Swimming Pools:  Closed for the 2001 season There are two outdoor heated swimming pools - one is 4 to 6 feet deep and the other is a smaller wading pool that is 2 feet deep. Pools overlook the Country Club Plaza, one story above the street level. The large pool size is 39 feet by 9 feet and ranges from 4 feet to 6 feet in depth. It connects to the smaller children's pool which is 2 feet deep and separating the pools are a bridge and water falls. Multi-level sun deck and terraced gardens surround the pools.
