Description:
In August 1851 Frenchman Jean Baptiste Lamy arrived in the New Mexico Territory as the first Bishop of Santa Fe. The story of his pioneering adventures was later told by Willa Cather in her famous novel "Death Comes for the Archbishop". Lamy discovered this fertile valley planted with fruit trees by sixteenth-century Franciscan fathers. Here he built a private retreat; his chapel still stands today. Lamy's hospitality was famous, and an invitation to visit his country estate was an honor much sought after. Some years after the Archbishop's death, the land was acquired by the Pulitzer publishing family of St. Louis. Two large, rambling vacation homes were built; these became the beginnings of the property to establish "a very fine and superior resort." The Bishop's Lodge has hosted business meetings since 1922, when the Hoover Commission negotiated the Colorado River Compact here. For three generations until 1998 the Thorpe family welcomed seekers of business and pleasure in the tradition of hospitality begun by Lamy so long ago. The property is now managed by the Coastal Hotel Group. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is The Bishop's Lodge, Santa Fe's premier conference and meetings resort. Secluded in its own private valley, rambling over 400 acres and bordered by National Forest, this exquisite retreat is also just five minutes from the heart of Old Santa Fe - the most intriguing and exciting destination city in the United States. "City close-country quiet!" The Bishop's Lodge combines the best of both worlds, providing a self-contained, distraction-free meeting environment amidst the attractions and activities of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico. Come experience how the gracious atmosphere and ideal setting of The Bishop's Lodge can add the spirit of Santa Fe to your next business gathering. |
