Hiking:
- In the heart of the wilderness area of Black Elk, lies Harney Peak, highest peak east of the Rockies. About 16 miles of trails are for your enjoyment around the area and to the top where a fire lookout tower was built in 1938. It was dedicated into the National Historical Society as a landmark June 13, 1991.
- The Norbeck Wildlife Preserve has about 35 miles of trails open to hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
- Custer State Park offers many self-guided trails and there are guided walks focusing on birds, wildlife, and wild-flowers.
- Centennial Trail runs 111 miles through the center of the Black Hills.
- The George S. Mickelson Trail, a historic rail road conversion, offers hiking and biking from the southern hills through Custer to the northern hills.

- Free City Courts are one block south of the stop light at Mount Rushmore Road and 8th Street.

Black Hills National Forest:
- Flynn Creek, 6 miles south on County Road 336
- Harry Mills , 7 miles west on Highway 16
- Hazelrodt, 7 miles southeast on County Road 341
- Custer State Park has many picnic areas
- Jewel Cave National Park
- Wind Cave National Park

Fishing:
- Trout, perch, and bass are some of the fish found in area lakes and streams. Fishing licenses are sold at the Court House.

Cave Tours:
- Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are part of the second largest cave system in the world. They offer a variety of guided walking tours and spelunking tours for the more adventurous. Cave temperature is about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, so a jacket and good walking shoes are suggested.

Museums:
- A free museum in the Old Court House is located at Mount Rushmore Road and 4th Street containing a historical view of our area. Donations are accepted.

Drives:
- The Black Hills has beautiful drives to view wildlife, lakes, rock formations, picture perfect tunnels, pig tail bridges , mile-high overlooks, and forests. Some in the Custer State Park are The Needles Highway (SD 87), Iron Mountain Road (US 16A), and the Wildlife Loop. There are many photo stops, picnic areas, walking trails, creeks, and rocks to climb. Maps of these and more roads are available from the motel.

Swimming:
- Swimming is popular at all of our area lakes. Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, and Center Lake are within Custer State Park. Large indoor pool is located in motel.

Boating:
- Boating and water skiing are popular at Pactola Lake, Lake Angostura, and Sheridan Lake.
|
|
Golfing:
- Rocky Knolls Golf Course is located one mile west of The Buffalo Ridge Inn. It is a 9 hole course among the trees and wildlife.

Evening Entertainment:
- Mountain Music Show, Lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore
- Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park
- Hot air balloon rides: Pick up guests at motel for early morning flight or sunrise flight.
